Nelson Mandela (1918 – 2013)

Nelson Mandela

My wife and I visited the Nelson Mandela memorial site on a recent trip to the Drakensberg. This site marks the place where Mandela was captured on the 5 August 1962. We specifically stopped off to lay a wreath and were not at all surprised to see so many other folk there,  – young and old,  carrying flowers – all paying their respects to a wonderful man. Apparently over 5,000 people visited this site over the weekend when Mandela’s death was announced. It was a very moving experience.

Here I’m holding a photo taken of me with Mandela in 1990

I had the privilege of meeting Nelson Mandela in 1990 at a business meeting in Gauteng. It was fabulous and such a privilege to meet such a distinguished gentleman, the Father of our democratic nation.

A visit to the Nelson Mandela Capture site is included in my tour to the Drakensberg as well as to the Midlands Meander. Whatever your interest let me design a tour to suit your needs. Look forward to hearing from you!

Off the beaten track!

I far prefer the adventure of driving on roads less travelled, and encountering the unexpected as you journey off the beaten track. These are some of the roads I’ve been on and some of the scenes I’ve encountered while driving ‘off the beaten track’ – far more exciting than driving along the Highways!

Whale watching!

On the way back from King Shaka airport a short while ago, having dropped a guest off in time for his flight, as I looked out to sea from Vantage Point just past Sibaya Casino I saw a whale breach close in, followed by a huge splash of white water. What a wonderful sight it always is! A sign of a healthy ocean. We have enjoyed a really good year of sightings these past few months.

Southern Right and Humpbacked whales

Many whales heading up the north coast as far as Madagascar, to the warmer waters, to calve. And soon they will be coming back. The little ones will be in tow but very independent already, as they cruise the seas down to Plettenberg Bay and Hermanus. These coastal villages are very well known homes to both the Southern Right and Humpbacked species.

Visitors from all over the world visit our shores annually to observe these monsters of the sea frolicking in their playground. A good place to include on any travel route once you have done KZN.
